SUSSEX

Welcome to the Manor of Cuckfield website. Lords of the Manor have been recognised as an integral part of local government since 600 AD. Cuckfield’s title dates back to 1535 and since the Dissolution of the Monasteries has changed hands several times. The tile now rests with Lord Pitt; having acquired it in August 2024 in accordance with long standing traditions in feudal and common law.

The purpose of the Lord of the Manor is to provide security to the residents of Cuckfield in exchange for participation by the people of the village in the life of the Manor. This is administered by enforcing law and order, adjudicating civil disputes in the Manorial Court and opening up vacancies for common law knighthood to willing and worthy residents and allies to the Manor. The Manorial Court’s activities are distinguished from that of the
Parish Council in that the former deals with questions of public safety and neighbourly relations through the appointed Lord of the Manor (primarily through common law); whilst the latter deals with ancillary economic and social policy issues such as planning and parish finance through an elected committee (primarily through statute law). Almost like the relationship between the Crown and Parliament.

Whilst the Manor strictly applies to Cokfeld (the very centre of Cuckfield), the Manor has opened itself up to governance of the modern parish boundaries of the village; along with, for civil disputes, opening proceedings to the wider County of Sussex and beyond.

If you would like to help the Manor or wish to use one of its services, feel free to contact the Manorial Court.
